鱼缸 Fish Tank
Installation, 2005
Acrylic, 300 (W) x 300 (D) x 400 H) (mm)
A couple of goldfishes moved into our studio last year, and soon they became an integral part of our team.
These fishes lived in a plastic dustbin at first, and such poor living condition was definitely unacceptable in an architectural design studio. So we decide to build a home for them. For the first time we were able to put some basic yet interesting architecture theories and techniques like Behavior Responding System, Interactive Digit Tracking, into practice in our own way by designing the fish tank.
We set up two video cameras to record the fishes’ swimming route within a cubic space, and discovered that they were not fond of this cubic living space. What they really love was the exterior of the tank, or rather, the freedom. People who live in the city are basically in the same situation, they have to compromise if they choose to live in the city. So our strategy is to give them a home with larger surfaces, soft boundaries, and a city context with a higher level of complexity by melting the box. They are not a plaything for human being. In fact, they lead a dignified life in their own space in the fish tank, and they are watching you too when you stare at them with your eyes wide open.
Isn’t everybody living in the city faces the same problem? Who is obliged to tell you what kind of space you should live in? How do you express your thoughts and judgment? When you live in the cubic boxes that are the products of industry age, or in the courtyard space, you are just like the fish, which are deprived of the right to choose their own living space. Living by the rules made by others, you will lose your identity and freedom like the fishes sold as a plaything on the street.
These cute creatures appear very contented with their life in our studio. They went to visit Chinese Museum of Fine Arts for about one week, where they met a good many people there and saw the first Biennale of Urbanism and Architecture. They also toured Shenzhen, Shanghai and Beijing with “GET IT LOUDER” exhibition this year, and next year they will embark on a round-world travel which will take them to Venice, Paris, London, New York, Tokyo, and Beijing as a member of “MAD in China”.
